Kinky Boots is part of a group of musicals based on films, following in the footsteps of Billy Elliot and Made in Dagenham. This time we are focused on the story of Charlie and Lola, who end up partnering together. Charlie has inherited the shoe factory following his father’s passing, and the business is finding it tricky to keep up with competitors. A chance meeting (well more timely intervention), has Lola crossing paths with Charlie, and they end up working together to make high-heeled boots for the drag queen niche-market, with the hopes of saving the struggling family business.
Kinky Boots is a feel good musical with well-choreographed pieces and music from Cyndi Lauper. Performances from both leads are strong, though Lola’s presence does light up the stage a bit more. The supporting cast of factory workers and the Angels (drag queen performers and shoe testers) bring enthusiasm and energy to the stage. The music included ballads and a few showstopping tunes that are really sung with heart. The dark factory setting and set design is wonderfully done and works well, as it emphasises highlight the colour and changes that Lola brings to Charlie and the rest of the factory workers. The ultimate message threaded throughout the show of acceptance is one that can appeal to a wide audience.
